Book Review~ Holiday Bliss

Holiday Bliss is book 2 in the Bliss series-- It comprises three romantic novellas by three different authors--set in different eras, in one home on the water called, Bliss.

Tending Her Heart by Kathleen Shoop

Julie Peters' plans to modernize Waterside Hospital's labor and delivery protocols are thwarted by old school doctors and brown-nosing colleagues. But a handsome doctor who understands her point-of-view has a fine bedside manner and a way of Tending Her Heart that has forever-after attached to it. Can a Thanksgiving stay in the regal home called Bliss give her the space she needs to right her future and fall in love?

There are so many themes in Tending Her Heart that I love. Empowering women to birth the way they want, giving dignity to birthing women, treating women equally, love conquering all, trusting the one you love, even when it's hard, and standing up for your convictions regardless of the consequences. However, it also puts casual sex on a bit of a pedestal and makes it seem as though the way to a woman's empowerment is through sex. That's a hard pill for me to swallow as it goes against my personal beliefs. I often ignore casual sex in books and chalk it up to our cultural and the times. But in this particular case it was talked about so frequently and in a way that I felt elevated it and demeaned those that choose to wait. Overall, I enjoyed the love story and watching them overcome their misunderstandings. It was just the way casual sex versus waiting was approached that bothered me. Overlooking that, and maybe even relating it simply to the time period the book is based in, I really enjoyed it.

As I mentioned, there are some sex scenes and discussions on sex, so if you're not okay with that, then you might want to skip this one.

The Christmas Miracle by Marcy Waldenville

Brenan Brown has a terrible secret. One his beautiful wife doesn't know about. One that could destroy his happiness and his family. One he'd thought he buried along with his former identity in a grave in Ireland. But shady characters--terrorists really--from his past come to the stately mansion with blackmail and kidnapping on their minds. And with his family's after at risk, his future in peril, all Brenan can hope for is The Christmas Miracle.

I loved this so much! This was a fantastic read. There are a lot of really great themes running through this story. It addresses the issues of the time such as equality and segregation as well as timeless issues such as family, trust, love and forgiveness. The only thing I wished to have been a little different is there is a secondary story line running alongside the main one, and while we get to see it begin and end, we don't get to see the middle part, it kind of drops out. I would've liked to see more development there. Otherwise, I absolutely adored this one!

There are some love scenes between a married couple, nothing too explicit that I would warn against reading it though. No details or anything. I would still put this in the sweet category.

Holiday Wish by JD Wylde

Vaughn Jennings has one rule he refuses to break. Not even for Chelsea Chathford, the curvaceous master carpenter he employs. With just reason. But with every day that goes by, it gets harder and harder to follow his rule. Can he follow his heart? Or forever wish he had? Because Christmas comes but once a year. And with it, the only chance to have his Holiday Wish come true.

This is a story of forbidden love...forbidden by the one in love. Because of a mistake in his past Vaughn makes sure to live within a certain set of self-imposed rules. Rules that Chelsea thinks are stupid. Well, one rule in specific. I enjoyed watching both of them fight their attraction and the rule that Vaughn thinks is necessary to protect himself and his company. This was a quick read, a real page turner that I quite enjoyed.

There is some sex and discussion of sex in this one as well.

My Overall Review:

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this collection. There's something for every winter holiday: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year. This is a wonderful, sweet collection that would be perfect to curl up on the couch with. It's interesting to see the contrast in the authors' writing style and interpretation on life and love. While two of these are a little more steamy, I would still recommend them to anyone looking for a good holiday romance...or three!
